Baden Powell Opportunities
Baden Powell Challenge Award
The Baden-Powell Challenge Award is the highest award a Guide can gain. It should be personally challenging and involves sustained effort over a period of time. To complete the Baden-Powell Challenge Award a Guide takes part in a Baden-Powell Adventure.
At what age can a Guide start her BP Award?
There is no age restriction for a Guide to start the Baden-Powell Award, however she will need to have
Taking into account the above requirements, a Guide is usually at least 12 years old before starting the BP Award.
When starting your Baden-Powell Award, you MUST complete the Baden Powell Award Registration Form. Available from either your leader, the County website or via email from Hilary Frankton County BP Adviser at email@example.com
How long should it take to complete the Award?
There is no time restriction for a Guide to complete the Award; however it is recommended that the challenge takes no more than 18 months to complete.
The Award must be completed while the girl is still a Guide (still registered on Go! as a Guide, not having taken her Senior Section promise)
What is a Baden-Powell Adventure?
To complete the Award, your Guide needs to take part in a Baden-Powell Adventure. This is a celebration of all she has achieved in guiding so far and is not subject to any kind of formal assessment. The Baden-Powell Adventure will have some kind of residential aspect e.g. overnight, weekend, or a midweek residential event. The Adventure must not be part of a unit event – this enables the Guides to take part in something beyond their usual experiences. Also no more than 4 girls from any unit should attend the same adventure.
It is recommended that a Guide attends the Adventure after her 13th birthday, but before her 16th birthday due to the nature of activities involved. However, some allowances can be made in exceptional circumstances, please discuss with your County BP Advisor
How will I know when the BP Adventures are running?
Dates will be advertised on the Essex West website, newsletter and via your leader once your registration form has been completed.
In addition you will need to
There is a lot of work involved with the Baden-Powell Challenge and it is not unusual for a Guide to take 12 -18 months to complete it.
Leaders should be careful not to fix standards but should encourage and support their Guides when they choose to work on the Baden-Powell Challenge. Once she has decided to start the Challenge your Guide will need assistance in preparing a Personal Action Plan. To help her get started you will possibly have to help her plan how and when she will complete each challenge, how she can tackle them and choose which ones she would like to do.
Baden-Powell Challenge support from Guiders
Help your Guide draw up a support plan:
Discuss with her in which way she will keep and present her Evidence of clauses done. This can be done in a number of ways:
It is not necessary for a Guide to fill a fat A4 file with essays on what she has done. It is far more important that she can explain what she chose to do, why and how she planned it! Baden-Powell Challenge Certificate and Badge
When your Guide has attended an Adventure and has finished all 10 clauses she will need to meet with the District Commissioner* who will review her evidence and discuss with her, her understanding of the Guide Promise.
She can then be presented with her Badge and Certificate. To obtain these you will have to complete a Baden-Powell Challenge Application for Award Badge & Certificate Form firstname.lastname@example.org
This is to be posted to Girlguiding Essex West, Suite S1, Bates Business Centre, Church Road, Harold Wood, Romford, Essex, RM7 0JF. A unit cheque for the appropriate amount of money (specified on the form.)
*Some Districts do not currently have a Commissioner and in these circumstances a neighbouring Districts' Commissioner can be approached or the Division Commissioner.
Baden-Powell Challenge Celebration
