Various parents came back to me saying how fab this was and they would nominate. And yesterday we found out that 17 other people had nominated her and then mine making it a record breaking 18 nominations which they've never had before in the awards.
I hadn't heard anything for ages and in fact had forgotten all about it when the other week I received an email saying that mum was chosen and was in the top five for community champion award. I then knew I had to tell her. It was the best kept secret for ages. Her words on the phone to me were 'oh oh oh... I think I'm going to cry'.
I came home especially for the event on Monday, and yesterday we all got dressed in our best clothes and headed to the Lord Ashby Building in Chelmsford for the event. We arrived and were given our name badges and taken to the special seating area and were given drinks. Before the presentation started we were treated to entertainment from 'Funky Voices Choir' and someone from the X factor. Mum was then taken away for her photo which may be published in Essex Life Magazine. We were then told to take our seats and she was so nervous, she was shaking so much. They came to her category and read the four names that got highly commended and then they read her name with a massive long section on her 18 nominations, her history in guiding, the love the brownies and parents all give her as well as some really lovely quotes from different nominations from the parents. Mum kept saying 'she felt like she had stopped breathing when they read her name' I cried.
She was presented with a lovely certificate, a glass trophy and a goody bag from the sponsors. Mum kept saying she felt very humble and that there were so many more people in the room that were true heroes.
We then were taken for a buffet dinner. We had such a good evening and all the way home she kept saying she still couldn't believe it.
Well done but more importantly a big thank you to all you give guiding. It's clear that your colleagues and parents certainly appreciate you as much us we do. - Jan Knight
She works tirelessly to make sure the girls have such a good time whilst learning new skills at the same time.
She is more than a Brown Owl, she is an inspiration and a prime example of Girl Guiding at its finest and this is the reasons I believe she deserves the Pride of Essex Award.
Nicky is so dedicated to the Girl Guide movement, she has so much love and respect for the girls and gives so much of her time. I am constantly amazed at the activities she provides, the creations they make, the visits and all they achieve for such a ridiculously small fee and I believe this is because she is so gifted at getting so much out of her Brownies
